Q&A with Army CB, Chris Carnegie
A.M. Allan
GoBlackKnights.com Army cornerback Chris Carnegie has played as much as any freshman this 2012 football campaign.
With only two regular-season games remaining, the native of Oakland (Calif.) is hoping to close out his first collegiate season with bang, as the Black Knights will take on Temple this Saturday and the finale against Navy on December 8th. The 6-foot-0, 190 pound defender took some time out on Tuesday to talk about that and more in our latest installment of Q & A.
GoBlackKnights.com: It appears that Temple's offensive is very similar to that of Rutgers. Is there anything that you anticipate seeing from the Owls on Saturday?
Carnegie: I'm definitely anticipating that they are going to pass the ball. It seems like the past few games the passing offense has done a little more than the run game, so I am expecting them to pass more.
GoBlackKnights.com: How are you feeling with ten games under your belt in your first season of college football?
Carnegie: At this stage, it's really about focusing on the keys, learning how to anticipate the offense ... what they are going to do, recognizing offenses, recognizing formations and doing the technique right. There's really no nervousness anymore. I'm not really a freshman anymore and now I have to focus, anticipate and take it to the next level.
GoBlackKnights.com: What has been the biggest challenge throughout the year and do you feel you have adjust to that challenge at this stage of the season?
Carnegie: First the challenge was getting use to the tempo of the game and I've adjusted to that. Now it's just really being discipline with my techniques and my keys. Sometimes I get surprised when a play will have out of a certain that we didn't practice and I will lose discipline so that's the main point now. I have to stay discipline what the coaches tell us a practice.
GoBlackKnights.com: At today's press conference, Coach Ellerson said the team is going through a lot of physical ailments which are expected this time of the year. That being said, how are you holding up physically?
Carnegie: Physically I am doing fine. A few bumps and bruises and you definitely get beat up playing a lot, especially after ten games. But nothing that I can't work through.
GoBlackKnights.com: Going back to the Rutgers game. Many felt that the Scarlet Knights' passing attack would be too much for the secondary to handle. Can you talk about the overall performance of secondary on Saturday?
Carnegie: My teammates played great. I mean there were a few keys that we messed up on. But overall, I think that was probably our best game defensively. We were making the stops and we made the 23rd ranked team kick (punt) the ball ... 3 & out and held them to 240 something yards in total offense, something like that. I thought it was a great game defensively.
We know that we can play with anybody. We know that playing with Rutgers the way we did ... nobody should be moving the ball that well on us if we do everything that we should be doing. If don't show up, of course we'll get smacked, but other than that, we can play with anyone.
GoBlackKnights.com: Do you feel that having Josh Jackson back after missing a couple of games has made a difference?
Carnegie: Yeah, he's certainly a key player. When Avery (Marques) was in, he stepped up, when Justin Trimble was in .... I mean everyone stepped up and did their part. But having him (JJ) back was certainly a benefit for the team.
GoBlackKnights.com: Do you still feel like a freshman when you are on the field?
Carnegie: No, not anymore {chuckles}
