November 5, 2012WEST POINT, N.Y. ?- Senior QB Trent Steelman, senior LB Nate Combs and sophomore LB Geoffery Bacon have been honored for their play in Army's 41-21 win over Air Force last Saturday. The victory set up a winner-take-all showdown with Navy for the Commander In Chief's Trophy on Dec. 8 in Philadelphia.
Steelman was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and the College Sports Madness Independent Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts against the Falcons. Steelman ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another 100 yards in his first service academy win as Army's starting signal caller.
It was just the second time in his career that he ran for 100 yards and passed for 100 yards in the same game. Steelman moved into third place on Army's career rushing ledger with 2,983 yards, passing 1946 Heisman Trophy winner Glenn Davis (2,959).
Bacon was honored as the Football Bowl Subdivision Defensive Player of the Week in a vote by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions' coverage markets.
Bacon made a team-high 13 tackles in helping limit the nation's No. 2 rushing offense to just 103 yards, its lowest total since 2008 and more than 260 yards below its season average. Bacon also recorded his first interception of the season versus the Falcons.
Combs picked up an honorable mention Linebacker of the Week nod from CollegeFootballPerformance.com. Combs racked up eight tackles, including 2.0 stops behind the line. He recovered a fumble in the end zone and registered his first career interception on the game's final play.
Combs leads the team with 11.0 tackles for loss despite missing two games with an injury.
Army plays its final road game of the season on Saturday when it travels to Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. The game will be televised live to a national audience by ESPNU.
