"This is another great developmental opportunity for our football team," Army head coach Rich Ellerson said. "We had a great experience with our spring game last season, and we feel it is important to continue strengthening the bond between Army Football and the U.S. Army. It's a tremendous chance to not only showcase our players and program, but it also gives the cadets the chance to experience these great Army communities."
Hood Stadium was officially opened on Oct. 19, 2012. The multi-purpose facility replaced Prichard Stadium which was built in 1951 and named in honor of Maj. Gen. Vernon Prichard, a member of West Point's Class of 1915 and a two-time football letterwinner. The new stadium holds 5,500 spectators, and in addition to Fort Hood events, is utilized in support of local schools.
In addition to the scrimmage, which will begin at 2 p.m., the Black Knights will also take part in training opportunities at Fort Hood. The Army players will have the chance to experience the facility's Engagement Skills Trainer which simulates realistic marksmanship and combat scenarios for some of the most common weapons in the U.S. Army arsenal. The team will also visit the Fort Hood Medical Simulation Training Center which trains soldiers in Combat Life Saver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care concepts.?
"III Corps and Fort Hood Soldiers and Families are honored to host West Point's Black and Gold game here in Central Texas," Fort Hood spokesman Col. Ben Danner said. "This is not only an opportunity for soldiers and families here to experience Army Football firsthand, it is an opportunity for the West Point team to experience some of the world-class training resources at Fort Hood.? Everybody wins."
The annual scrimmage will cap the Black Knights' spring practice sessions, which begin on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
