Solid week of spring practice for the Black Knights

When taking in the recent practice sessions for the Black Knights, it's easy to report that all is going well and the team had quality practice last Saturday where they played in a scrimmage environment.

Army was in full pads yesterday and on Tuesday as well.

Of course the Army faithful fans want to know the progress of both the team and players as well. But it is still really too early to truly assess how the spring has going thus far for each player, but here are definitely some players out there that are doing a good job.

At wide receiver Chevaughn Lawrence is really doing a quality job out there," shared receiver's coach, Tucker Waugh. "The thing about Chevy is that we treat him like an old veteran but he is still a relatively young player. He's come a long way since his last season already and he had a really good day on Tuesday. He definitely stands out."

"I've been pleased with Anthony Stephens so far and there's a bunch of young guys that I'm really excited about. But we need to see a lot of them in a real football environment."

At quarterback there is plenty of competition at the starting spot, as well as establish position on the depth chart. Although many observers were quick to hand over the reigns to A.J. Schurr, there are three others clearly who will have something to say about that. They are Angel Santiago Kelvin White and senior Cody Jackson, whereby each is clearly holding their own thus far.

It should be interested to see who comes out on top for the No. 1 spot.

At running back, even with senior Raymond Maples shelved for the spring as he recovers from ankle surgery, the slot backs have looked crisp thus far. This should not come as a surprise as this stage of their football tenure at Army. Players like Terry Baggett, Trenton Turrentine and Stephen Fraser are seasoned players and have picked up where they left off in 2012 and then some.

In addition to their experience , it is the addition of Coach Wayne Moses, who now oversees the group of slotbacks. The changeover, not only with Moses, but in some of the other coaching spots appear to have rejuvenated many of the players and it can be seen in how they are approaching each practice.

When looking for surprises in camp far ... from our observation, what the staff has expected has materialized with the current crop of players. So where will the surprises come from? For the most part that will transpire in August when the prep school players and the direct admit commits arrive on campus.

Practice resumes on Saturday at 7:00am.
