If I were asked who Albren 'AJ' Johnson reminds us of … my initial response would be former Army wide receiver Isaiah Alston (now at Iowa State). However, I would add that the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Johnson’s package comes with more speed than that of Alston.

Needless to say, his enthusiasm for the possibilities with Army West Point is also pretty obvious.

“Yes as of now I will be at Knight Vision,” bellowed Rivals 3-Star WR prospect, AJ Johnson relative to Army’s big upcoming recruiting weekend.

The product of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis (IN) holds several offers that include Army of course, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Howard, Kent State, Marshall, West Virginia, and Stony Brook.

Army Offer & West Point Visit - In His Own Words

“I got my West Point offer after the season by Coach (Blake) Powers in March and he’s been hands-on ever since,” Johnson explained, as he turned the conversation back to his upcoming visit to the historic academy.

“Yes, will be my first time there and I’ve heard a lot of great things about the campus and people there from some former teammates who are playing there now and from one of my teammates who’s already visited … so I’m excited to check it out.”

“They are high on my list and if I had to make a Top 3 right now they would be in it.”

The Offensive Fit

“Army is recruiting me at receiver,” offered Johnson. “They say they like the things I do on my tape and that I can be a really good piece for them.”

‘Yeah, so I feel like I bring a lot of good things to the table with my style you don’t see a lot of guys my size who can move like me and have the speed like I have. I also feel like I bring a lot of competitiveness because I like to win and West Point is mostly known for their toughness and I bring that. I also feel with my style I go get the ball, I can run a lot of different routes short, long, medium whatever is needed and I feel I could be a good piece.”

2023 Junior Season

Johnson and his teammates are coming off last season’s record of 6-4, where they lost their regional championship, 27-23.

For the 2023 campaign, the talented receiver had 20 receptions for 550 yards and 7 touchdowns.

So what is the student-athlete who holds a 3.2 GPA looking for in a college program?

“What I look for in a school is just a home away from home with coaches that I can trust and honest with me and will take care of me and that family atmosphere,” he explained. “Coaches that are gonna push me and help me get to my dream which is to play in the NFL. And to be around a bunch of guys who want to win and a place where coaches allow me to come in and compete for a job.”

“Yes, Coach Powers has he’s talked about all the guys (former Army players) in the NFL.”

In addition to his gridiron talents, Johnson also has a presence on the hardwood as well as track for his high school.

He plays small forward in basketball and he ran the second leg for the 4x100 relay this year, where he and his teammates broke the school record twice and placed 4th at the state meet. His PR - split in the relay was 10.9.
