RELATED GBK ARTICLE: Passing in the Triple Option Offense

Unlike previous years, there is little doubt as to who will be starting at quarterback this season, barring injuries, of course. Senior Ahmad Bradshaw established himself as the starter in 2016. He cemented his hold with the huge win over Navy and received the mantle of leadership when the team voted the product of Chicago as one of the 2017 Co-Captains.

So, while we’re confident that Bradshaw is established #1, we’ll take a look at who is battling for spots behind the senior QB, based on our own assessment, with a lot of input from Army offensive coordinator, Brent Davis.

ADDING DEPTH AT QUARTERBACK

As we have learned from watching Navy’s experience in 2016 and Air Force’s experience in 2013, you can never have too many quarterbacks; so we were happy to hear from Bateman that we have some good depth this season. How do the contenders stack up?

Davis:Chris Carter has some good game experience and has done a nice job. He’s played quality snaps in just about every game last year. He did some good things and started a couple of games in 2015 (Rutgers & Navy) as well. He’s definitely No. 2 right now.”

Carter appeared in 9 games in 2016. He rushed for 263 yards in 43 attempts for an impressive 6.1 yards per attempt with 2 rushing TDs. He completed 9 of 23 passing attempts (39.1%) for 176 yards with 2 TDs and 1 Interception.

Malek McGue was the only other quarterback with game experience, but he was moved to slotback this spring opening the door for a couple of new challengers at quarterback.

Davis: “We saw a lot of good things out of Kelvin Hopkins in the spring. He brings an element as a thrower .... he’s an accurate passer who has a strong arm. He gives another element to the offense. He got better as far as his understanding of the offense this spring.”

“Chris did some good things as well, and again, Chris is the solid No. 2, but as Kelvin continues to develop he will push him for that spot.”

Davis: “Behind them is Luke Langdon. He’s a guy that has been injured and he missed last season, but did a great job as a student coach. Thankfully this year he is going to be healthy. He really understands the offense, has done some good things and it’s good to see him back out there.”
