Maples Named Independent Offensive Player of the Week

WEST POINT, N.Y.  - Army junior RB Raymond Maples was recognized as the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts in the Black Knights' game at Wake Forest. Maples ran for 140 yards on just 15 carries and added a touchdown reception versus the Demon Deacons.

He is the first Army player to open a season with three consecutive 100-yard efforts since Akili King in 1993. He has moved into a tie for sixth place on the Black Knights' career 100-yard list with eight such outings.

The Philadelphia native ranks sixth in the nation in rushing this season at 135.3 yards per game.

 

Maples ran for 1,066 yards in 2011, the ninth best season total in Academy history. He is trying to become only the third Army player to record multiple 1,000-yard seasons (Mike Mayweather & Carlton Jones).

 

Army boasts the last two Independent Offensive Player of the Week recipients. Sophomore FB Larry Dixon won the honor following a 136-yard, three-touchdown game against Northern Illinois.

 

The FBS Independent Players of the Week are selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions' coverage markets.
