Army picked up a commitment today from 2-star defensive lineman Troy Porche from Houston (TX) Lamar High School.

The 6-foot-2, 270 pound Porche chose the Black Knights over such schools at Texas Tech, although he has yet to visit the West Point campus.

With the addition of Porche, Army’s 2017 recruiting class is laced with a very impressive group of defensive newcomers.

The ideal size and fits the mode to play in middle of the Black Knights’ 3-4 defense, Army recruited Porche to play nose guard.

“Defensive tackle is my position and I've played DT all through high school,” he shared on Monday.

The D-lineman, who has been recruited by wide receiver coach, Keith Gaither, received the Army offer in June, but according to Porche, he has also developed a solid relationship with 1st year D-line coach, Chad Wilt.

So when it came to making his commitment, he shared with GoBlackKnights.com that it was Wilt whom he first made contact with.

“I notified the staff Friday night,” said Porche. “I told Coach Wilt first and then got on the phone with Coach Gaither.”

“Basically we discussed all the benefits and success I would have at West Point and then they spoke to my parents for awhile. Afterwards me and Coach Wilt spoke about what I could do for the team and informed me he wanted me to play the tackle position on the D-line.”

As we previously mentioned, Porche has made his commitment, despite not having stepped foot on campus, which has actually occurred with at least 3 other 2017 commits.

“Well, I come from a military family ... where my brother went to Air Force for a little while and my dad went to the Marines and I've always been enamored by the military,” declared Porche.

“I also could not pass up the job opportunities for myself in the future once I graduate. So, I have not taken a visit to West Point yet, but I plan to after the season.”

During his 2015 junior football season, Porche locked down 60 tackles, 15TFL and 6 sacks, along with also participating in the Rivals Camp Series in Dallas (TX) this spring.

Along with making plans to visit the academy, look for the D-lineman to visit other campuses as well.

“My commitment to West Point is pretty solid at this point, but I do want to exercise my five official visits,” he explained.

Stay tuned as GoBlackKnights.com will have the breakdown of Porche’s commitment and the impact his pledge will have on this 2017 recruiting class, so keep it right here as we have you covered with all the latest.
