Temple scored what appeared to be the winning touchdown with 1:38 left in the game, but back-up quarterback Kelvin Hopkins came in to lead Army West Point on a thrilling 80 yard drive to tie the score at 28-28 on a 16 yard pass to receiver Jermaine Adams with 1 second left on the clock in regulation. The overtime period nearly anti-climactic in comparison, as Temple won the toss giving Army the first OT possession. Army got one first down and appeared to be driving for 7, but the Temple defense held, forcing head coach Jeff Monken to send in Wilson for a 29 yard field goal. On Temple’s OT possession, they got as far as the Army 10, and Boumehri missed his second field goal attempt of the game to hand the win to Army West Point.

With this win, the Black Knights guaranteed themselves a spot in the Armed Forces Bowl in December. Here’s how it all happened.

First Quarter - Army Scores First to Lead 7-0

Temple received the opening kick and got two first downs before the Army defense forced them to punt. Army returned the punt to the 26 where the Black Knights started their first possession.

Temple defense forced a three-and-out and Zack Potter came in to punt to the Temple 19, where the Owls started their second possession. Three incomplete passes forced another Owl punt and Army started their second possession on their own 32.

Fullback Darnell Woolfolk carried twice for 9 yards and starting-up QB and Co-Captain Ahmad Bradshaw converted on 3rd an one. A Temple offsides penalty gave Army a first and 5 on the 44, and after two short gains, Connor Slomka converted the second 3rd and 1. Temple was called offside again giving Army first and 5 on the Temple 39, and slotback John Trainor carried outside for a first down on the 36. Two more short gains brought up another 3dand 1 and Bradshaw surged for the first down to the 19. Woolfolk picked up a big 8 yards to the 11 and Woolfolk carried it in from there to give the Black Knights and early 7-0 lead. Army used 12 plays and nearly 7 minutes on the 68-yard march.

Nick Schrage kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchback, and Temple started their next possession on their own 25, picking up 9 yards before time ran out in the quarter.

Second Quarter - Army Opens the Lead but Owls Close it

Temple started the second quarter with a long run to the Army 48, but after an incomplete pass, the defense stopped Temple for a 2 yard loss, and another incomplete forced Temple to punt, but linebackert Cole Christiansen broke through to block the punt giving Army the ball back on the Owl 28.

Bradshaw completed a pass to wide receiver Jeff Ejekam that he took to the Temple 4, and Woolfolk carried it in from there for his second touchdown to open the lead to 14-0.

Schrage kicked it to the 2 and the coverage team stopped the return at the temple 19. An 8 yard run and a short pass gave Temple a first down on the 31. Army held Temple to 3 yards on two plays, but then Kirkwood made a catch over the top of two Army defenders to give the Owls a first down on the 50, and on the next play Isaiah Wright broke loose for touchdown to close the gap to 14-7.

Army let the ball go for a touchback to start on their own 25 and Bradshaw completed his second pass to slotback Jordan Asberry for a first down on the 46. The Owl defense held at that point, and Schrage came in to punt to the Owl 17. Temple picked up 2 quick first downs into Army territory at the 47. An offside penalty gave Temple another first down on the 37 and the Nutile found Jennings open on a long pass to tie the game at 14-14.

Starting slotback Kell Walker returned the ball to the 20 where Army started their next possession. Walker carried for 5 around end and Bradshaw picked up a first town at the 44. In the next series a holding penalty put Army in a third and 16 situation, and after Bradshaw got 13 of that back, Monken lined up to go for it on 4th and 3 with 18 seconds left on the clock. Temple called a timeout, and Monken sent the punt team in. Temple was called for running into the kicker to give Army a first down. Hopkins came in for a last second scoring attempt but threw it incomplete to Jermaine Adams.

Third Quarter - Scoreless

Walker electrified the stadium when he returned the second half kickoff for what looked to be a touchdown, but a holding penalty brought the ball back to the 17. The Temple defense held the Black Knights to 4 yards in 3 plays and Schrage came in to punt to the Temple 11.

Temple picked up a first down on 3 plays and then completed 2 passes for another first down. Three more plays got Temple to the Army 29, where the defense stopped two runs for no gain. On 3d and 10, James Nachtigal sacked the Nutile for a 9 yard loss to force an Owl punt, and it was downed on the 3 yard line where Army started their next drive.

The offense managed only 8 yards in three plays before having to punt it away again. Schrage punted to the Temple 36 where the Owls started their second possession of the half. The Owls appeared on their way to another touchdown as Nutile completed back to back passes to get the Owls to the Army 2. The defense stiffened and a Temple false start pushed them back to the 7 and on 3d and 7 a big rush forced Nutile to ground the ball, and Temple sent in the kicking team. Boumehri’s 32 yard attempt bounced off the right goal post and Army took over on the 20. Army picked up one first down to the 35 before time ran out in the third quarter

"Kelvin has a strong and accurate arm. He spent last season on the scout team and did a nice job with it. Today, he have us the best chance to put the ball on the money and to release it quick. When we practice our one minute offense, which we do a few times a week so if it comes up we have a chance and I thought he did a great job. The whole team did a great job."

Fourth Quarter - A Wild Ending Ties it in Regulation

The Owl defense held at the Army 35 and Schrage punted the ball 47 yards to the Temple 22. The defense held for two downs, but Nutile completed a 36 yard pass for a first down and then Armstead ran for a 43 yard touchdown to give Temple their first lead of the game at 21-14.

Army went three and out on their next possession, and had to punt it away. The Owls drove the ball to the Army 34 before the Army defense stopped them. Temple took a delay of game to give their punter a better chance, but he kicked it into the end zone for a touchback, and Army got the ball back on their own 20.

Bradshaw was dropped for a 4 yard loss and then picked up the first down on a 32 yard completion to Kell Walker at the 48. Fullback Andy Davidson ran twice for 8 yards, and then Woolfolk broke loose for his third touchdown on a 44 yard run from scrimmage to tie it back up.

Schrage had to make a saving tackle on the next kickoff as Temple returned it to the 42. A false start penalty set the Owls back to the 37, but on 3d and 6, Nutile completed to Wright for 20 yards and a first down on the Army 34. Armstead picked up another first down to the 22 on a 12 yard run and after the defense held him to a yard gain, Armstead broke loose for a 21 yard score with 1:37 left on the clock. It appeared the game was over at that point, but Monken had not abandoned hope.

Kelvin Hopkins came in to test his passing arm in a last ditch attempt to tie the score. Hopkins missed on two attempts, but then ran for 11 yards and a first down at the 32. Hopkins next attempt fell incomplete and then he took a sack to bring up 3d and 15, bringing up the key play of the series. A pass completed to John Trainor was ruled a yard short of the first down, but on review the officials gave him the first down on the 42, which also added a precious 24 seconds back on the clock. Walker picked up 6 to the Army 48, and then picked up another 6 on a pass by Hopkins to the Temple 46. Hopkins next two attempts fell incomplete, but then he completed anothe pass to Walker on the 25. After grounding the ball to stop the clock, Hopkins hit Adams with a 9 yard completion to the 16, and the clock was stopped with 6 seconds left. Hopkins fired a perfect strike to Adams for the touchdown with a second left on the clock.

Overtime

Temple won the toss and gave Army first possession. Woolfolk picked up a first down to the 15 and gained another 6 to the 9, but Temple stopped him after a 1 yard gain and then dropped Walker for a 4 yard loss; so Monken sent Wilson in for the field goal.

Temple reached the Army 5 before the defense stopped them, but Boumehri came in and missed his second field goal attempt from 27 yards, and Army West Point had their win.
