GBK: Army Baseball Playoff Preview

Saturday marks the start of the postseason for the Army baseball team as the Lafayette Leopards head to town for a best of three series. A doubleheader (both nine inning games) will kick off at noon at Doubleday, with a game three (if necessary) scheduled for 1 PM Sunday. Army took the regular season series against Lafayette, three games to one. After falling in the opener, Army took game two in extra innings and completed a doubleheader sweep on the heels of Clint Moore's record performance at the plate.

As part of GBK's special playoff coverage, read on for a position by position breakdown of the two opponents and who gets the edge at each position. Army's player will be listed first in each matchup.
Catcher: Junior J.T. Watkins vs. Senior A.J. Miller- Edge: Lafayette
With all due respect to Army backstop J.T. Watkins who picked up second team all-league honors, Lafayette holds a pretty comfortable edge in this category against just about anybody. Miller was named the League Player of the Year Tuesday, boasting a .397 batting average and 12 home runs. One thing is clear: Army's ability to control Miller will be a big factor in this weekend's outcome.
First Base: Senior Joey Henshaw vs. Senior Matt Fenster- Edge: Army
Army's huge first baseman gets the nod here due to his big time production at the plate this season. Army's biggest snub from the all-league rolls, Henshaw is currently second on the team with a .324 batting average and his ability to drive in runs in bunches is a key for Army this postseason. Fenster is batting .275 this season.
Second Base: Junior Zach Price vs. Sophomore Kevin Casey- Edge: Army
Army junior Zach Price picked up his second career first team selection Tuesday, adding to the citation from his freshman campaign where he picked up Rookie of the Year honors as well. Price leads Army with a .340 batting average and is arguably the best true leadoff hitter Army has had in recent memory. Casey is batting .269 for the Leopards.
Shortstop: Senior Clint Moore vs. Junior Brian Davila- Edge: Army
Another year, another first team citation for Clint Moore. Despite having undoubtedly his worst year in an Army uniform, Moore's performance against Lafayette two Mondays ago is the reason opposing teams are terrified of him. His .268 batting average is unimpressive, but his team-high 10 home runs are; and if he is hot, Army wins. Davila is hitting .276 this season.
Third Base: Senior Steve May vs. Sophomore Scott Kelleher- Edge: Army
May was recently selected to the all-league first team, joining three of his teammates on the list. After a horrid March, Steve got hot and has been a catalyst for the Army offense down the stretch. He is not a huge power threat from the third base position, but .304 is a solid batting average and his ability to get on base allows the big men in the order to get their RBIs in. Kelleher holds a .270 average for Lafayette.
Left Field: Senior Ben Koenigsfeld vs. Freshman Andrew Santomauro- Edge: Army
Koenigsfeld rounds out the Army selections to the all-league teams, picking up his fourth straight first team honor.
Koenigsfeld is third on the Army team with a .305 batting average and second on the squad with six home runs. His consistent performance in the heart of the order has led to big innings for Army during league play this season. Lafayette rookie Santomauro has posted a .250 average this season.
Center Field: Senior David Darnell vs. Senior Rob Froio- Edge: Lafayette
Froio was Lafayette's second member of the Patriot League first team on the heels of a season in which he has hit .324 and put up a .387 on base percentage. Serving as Lafayette's leadoff man, he has provided the spark for plenty of Leopard rallies. Like Miller, slowing Froio is a big priority for the Army staff this weekend.
Right Field: Junior Cody Murtle vs. Senior Alex Bechta- Edge: Lafayette
Bechta has hit a decent .298 this year, but holds a sparkling .421 on base percentage. He extends Lafayette's batting order and Bechta has added 8 stolen bases to his resume during the year.
Designated Hitter: Freshman Brent Peterson vs. Junior Bobby Fargnoli- Edge: Even
I will call this one even, as neither team boasts a real threat at the DH position. Peterson has been the most productive of Army's positional rookies this year, but still is hitting just .242 for the Black Knights. Fargnoli has not fared any better, however, and comes into the weekend batting a low .229 for Lafayette.
Game 1 Starter (projected): Junior LHP Logan Lee vs. Junior RHP Ethan Perro- Edge: Army
Game 1 should feature Lee (3-8, 4.22 ERA) against Perro (3-3, 5.22 ERA). Although Logan Lee has an ugly W-L record, he has been Army's most consistent starter this season and holds a decent earned run average.
Game 2 Starter (projected): Junior RHP Scott Lucado vs. Junior RHP John Gentile- Edge: Army
Lucado (1-0, 4.12 ERA) holds Army's best ERA for a starting pitcher, and has displayed dominant stuff at times this season.
Lafayette's Gentile (2-7, 5.50 ERA) will look to turn in a big performance for Lafayette Saturday afternoon.
Game 3 Starter (projected): Sophomore RHP Chris Rowley vs. Senior RHP Zach Fritz- Edge: Army
Rowley and Fritz hold identical 3-4 records, but Rowley boasts a 4.83 ERA, while Fritz checks in with a 7.24 ERA. If this thing goes to three games, Army should be able to get to Fritz early…his opponents are hitting .341 for the year and he has given up three times as many home runs as the rest of the starters combined.
Bullpen: Edge: Army
Both teams feature dominant closers (Koenigsfeld for Army, Snell for Lafayette), so building a lead before the 8th inning is a high priority for both squads. The edge goes to Army because they have a trio of young arms in the pen that have been fairly productive this season. The trio is led by sophomore RHP John Buckley (15 APP, 3.96 ERA) and fans can also expect to see freshman RHP Gunnar Carroll (17 APP, 4.42 ERA) and sophomore RHP Ken Jackson (16 APP, 7.30 ERA) during tight situations late in the game. Lafayette's bullpen consists of junior LHP John Rems (18 APP, 6.00 ERA), junior LHP Sean McGrath (19 APP, 6.38 ERA), and junior RHP Chris Boyce (17 APP, 6.60 ERA).
Prediction: Army in 3. Neither team features a very dominant pitching staff, so runs should not be too hard to come by. With each of these games being nine inning affairs, I foresee Army getting into a shaky Lafayette bullpen and causing some damage. Lafayette has been outscored 167-92 between the 5th and the 8th innings this year, and I expect that trend to continue this weekend. In the end, five is the magic number: Lafayette is just 6-21 when scoring 5 runs or less this year.
