On Tuesday, Dec. 1st, talented athlete Jay Mayes made the call that would make him part of the ever growing 2021 recruiting class of the Army Black Knights.

“I was on the phone with Coach (Matt) Drinkall, who I have been talking to throughout my whole recruiting process,” Mayes told GoBlackKnights.com.

“He provide a ton of information about the schooling part of West Point over the last couple of months and that really excited me that my whole life is set by graduating. I had told him that I talked to my family and that we all think it’s the best decision for me to become a Black Knight.”

“I haven’t spoken to Coach (Jeff) Monken on the phone since I have committed, but he texted me welcoming me to the brotherhood.”

Despite not stepping on the historic grounds of the United States Military Academy at West Point, as well as their state of the art football facilities, Mayes shared with GoBlackKnights.com, that his college decision was a no-brainer.

“I have only seen campus virtually unfortunately, but I was EXTREMELY impressed with the campus as a whole and the football facilities all together,” shared the 5-foot-11, 175 ponder out of Fairfield (OH) Fairfield High School, who had this to say about what lead him to make the call.

“The culture that comes with being part of West Point, an Ivy League level of education, and they play high level football.”

It will be interesting to see which side of the ball Mayes will be on to start his Army football career … cornerback or running back?

“I’d play whatever they need me too, but if I had a preference I would play corner,” declared Mayes, who during his senior season rushed for 1,043 yards and 9 touchdowns, despite not starting at running back until week five of the 2020 season.

His output landed him 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Southwest Ohio as a running back.

Mayes is just as impactful in the class, where he holds a 3.4 GPA and the preliminary assessment has him entering the academy as a direct admit.
