It does matter what category one might fall under when it comes to being tied to the Army football program. You can be a general/casual fan, West Point Grad, former player, parent of a player, etc … but at the end of the day, the embellishing feeling is that this is the year for the Army Black Knights.

In their first season in their new conference (AAC) the Black Knights (6-0, 5-0 AAC), owners of the nation's longest active win streak of 10 games, and coming into this week, Head Coach Jeff Monken’s squad was ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and No. 24 in the Coaches Poll.

GoBlackKnights.com had an opportunity to catch up with a few former players to get their take on the aforementioned accomplishment by this year’s team.

Alejandro Villanueva

Army Football 2006 - 2009

• Villanueva played college football for the Army Black Knights at several positions, including left tackle, defensive lineman and wide receiver. Although he was originally recruited as a tight end, he played defensive end during his freshman season, mostly on special teams. In his sophomore season, Villanueva converted to an offensive tackle which occurred near the end of his sophomore year. By his junior season, he started every game at left tackle. Voted a team captain before his senior year, he reluctantly converted once more to become a 290 pounds wide receiver

8 years in the NFL 20014 - 2022

• Signed with the Eagles in 2014; was picked up by the Steelers and played for them from 2004- 2020 and then signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021 prior to his retirement in March of 2022

"Army and Navy both being ranked makes college football that much better right now"

Marquel Broughton West Point Class of 2023

Safety and played from 2019-2022 and was a team captain in 2021 & 2022

“I am extremely proud of the guys on the team. When I watch the games I see everyone doing their 1/11th and it is amazing. You can tell the team following the Army Plan and having fun while doing it. Guys flying to the ball … bodies all over the ground in the trenches. Just amazing to watch as a former player.”

Raymond Maples West Point Class of 2015

Army Football 2010-2014

• A-Back (slotback)

• Rushed for 1000+ yards in 2011 and 2012

“I think this is a result of what it looks like when you have buy-in from all levels at the academy; the players, staff, as well as the corps. This is an amazing time to be an Army fan. I do believe the chance to actually make it to the playoffs is the extra boost that the program needed and I tip my hat to Coach Monken and the AD Mike Buddie for getting us into a conference without jeopardizing the Army-Navy game … I think the team is playing lights out and just praying that everyone stays healthy.”
Maples

Alex Aukerman West Point Class of 2018

Army Football 2014-2017

• Outside Linebacker (#21) and a member of the JAAK Attack

“It has been awesome to see this team dominate week in and week out and love that they’re getting the recognition they deserve being in the Top 25. I’ve been really impressed with how they’ve finished games and not let these teams stick around. I’m confident Coach Monken and the rest of the staff will keep the guys focused on one game at a time and I’m excited to watch the second half of the season.”
