“It’s a great honor,” said an exuberant Delshaw Traylor, when discussing his verbal commitment to play his college ball at Army West Point.

The 5-foot-11, 180 pounder, who is out of La Mesa (CA), made his way across country to see West Point and the Black Knights’ football program first hand and the rest is history.

“I took an unofficial yesterday and kicked off my tour with a chance to speak to Coach [Jeff] Monken,” stated the product of Helix High School. “We sat and talked for a bit and as he was getting ready to leave I told him I decided to commit and he embraced me and the other coaches and players I saw throughout the day embraced me as well.”

Coach Sean Saturnio has been responsible for Traylor’s recruiting and the incoming QB indicated that he has developed a special with the assistant coach.

“He’s been with me since day one and I owe it to him for getting me here ... it’s a dream come true and I found my home,” shared the quarterback.

“He basically told me how he appreciated my respect to him and the school, as well as my confidence about my future with Army football,” Traylor explained to GoBlackKnights.com. “I told him a couple months ago if you guys decide to offer me and I decide to commit to Army, I will become your starting quarterback one day. And since then he and I have had a strong bond that I can’t wait to build upon in the upcoming years.”

The View From Atop West Point

Traylor readily admitted that the surroundings of the academy itself are basically icing on the cake and almost impossible to ignore.

“Honestly the views of the campus, it was beautiful,” said the Rivals 2-star QB. “In all honesty it reminded me of home ... I was raised in Alabama and it gave me that home vibe that I don’t really get to see where I live now which is San Diego. And then finally it was the Brotherhood, like I said the players who heard I committed embraced me like I was already on the team and that’s when I knew I found home.”

Deciding Factors

“As cliche as it sounds it was the best decision for me,” described Traylor. “My father is in his 21st year serving in the Navy so the military aspect always intrigued me and then I love football with a passion so it was an all around easy decision for me.”

At Helix, the confident QB and his team finished the season with a 8-4 record, where he accumulated 942 total offensive yards and 17 touchdowns.

“My offensive stats don’t truly reflect what I was capable of,” he stated. “I played more defense last year, but I’m doing everything this year.”

QB Kelvin Hopkins - The Role Model

Despite his confidence, Traylor knows that there is much to learn at the next level, which is why he is elated to have such an accomplish quarterback like Army’s Kelvin Hopkins to watch and take notes.

“Kelvin Hopkins is legit ... ever since Army began recruiting me I’ve been watching and learning his game."

“Kelvin Hopkins is legit,” said Traylor, who carries a 4.1 GPA and is entering as a direct admit. “Ever since Army began recruiting me I’ve been watching and learning his game. I consider myself a dual threat quarterback and at my school we run a spread option which I know isn’t the triple option, but I feel that it will give me and advantage because I can run and throw.”

Stay tuned as GoBlackKnights.com will have the breakdown of Traylor’s commitment and the impact his pledge will have on this 2020 recruiting class, so keep it right here as we have you covered with all the latest.
