It has been an extremely busy couple of weeks in college football. From high profile head coaching vacancies being filled to the enormous compensation packages associated with them. Then you several rivalry contests that took place from Ohio State being taken down by arch-rival Michigan to Alabama beating Auburn in overtime in a slugfest and list goes one. Oh yeah, if you fast forward to yesterday and various contests, the college football playoff landscape became much clearer … as Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Cincinnati make up the “final-four” and will play for the National Championship.
Oh, by the way, today it has been confirmed that the Army Black Knights will face off against the Missouri Tigers on 12/22 in the Armed Forces Bowl.
There is no denying that college football fans have so many venues to be focused on, now and going forward. However, there is still one game that will take place while all other programs are in a dormant status and that’s December 11th, when Army meets Navy for their 122nd gridiron meeting.
So as GoBlackKnights.com counts down to their head-to-head meeting MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, we will bring a variety of articles, topics, interviews, etc., so keep it right here.
Let’s jump-start our kick-off with our very own GBK Analyst and Writer Joe Iacono, who had a one-on-one with former Army Fullback, Larry Dixon - Class of 2015.
Let’s hear what Larry had to say, especially surrounding the essence of the Army-Navy game.
Looking Back - Fullback Larry Dixon - Class of 2015
• No wins and 4 losses playing against Navy
• Dixon entered West Point from Bremerton, WA in 2011 after spending a year at USMAPS. Dixon got an early start as a plebe, initially playing behind Jared Hassin, but moving into the starting spot at fullback for the last 5 games of the season. He finished 4th in rushing that year and carried the ball 10 times for 65 yards in the 27-21 loss to Navy that year.
• Dixon was on the receiving end of the fumbled hand-off from Trent Steelman that ended what looked like it would be the winning drive in the 2012 Navy game. With Navy leading 17-13 in the waning minutes of the game, Steelman led the team on a 70-yard march in 11 plays to reach a first and ten at the Navy 14 yard line before the fumble that cost Army the game. Dixon carried the ball 16 times for 61 yards in the game.
• Dixon carried the ball 9 times for 37 yards in the 34-7 loss to Navy in 2013.
• Under Jeff Monken’s fullback-centric offense, Dixon led Army in rushing yards in 2014 with 1102 yards and a 5.8 rushing average. He led the team with 90 yards in 14 carries in the 17-10 loss in 2014.
