QB Theophilus Setzer excited by offer from the Black Knights
Yes, St. Pauls High School Head Football Coach Mike Setzer out of St. Pauls, North Carolina has the same name last name as 2025 QB commit, Theophilus Setzer. The narrative is very simple … they are not only coach/player, but father/son.
Before we get started, we wanted to get clearance from the senior Setzer on what is appropriate to call his son.
“We his parents call him Theophilus, but most people call him Theo, so Theo is fine and thanks for asking,” explained Coach Setzer.
Here’s just a quick refresher course on the recruiting of solid incoming quarterback and his pledge to the Army Black Knights of West Point.
Setzer was offered by the Black Knights back on March 12th, but also was being highly recruited by both Navy and Air Force. The 6-foot-1, 180 pounder had narrowed his choices to the three academies and opted to make his college decision on NSD (2/5). To the delight of the Army coaching staff, fans and of course his family, he is now committed and signed with the Black Knights.
Now, that’s enough from us, let’s hear from Coach Setzer and his evaluation of Theo Setzer, who is a very solid NSD addition to the 2025 recruiting class.
THEO’S FIT FOR THE ARMY OFFENSE:
“Theo is a dangerous dual threat QB. Army’s constant evolution in their offense tailors to the abilities and skills he likes to display. He plays QB all 4 years (Started varsity last 3 years).”
THEO THE STUDENT-ATHLETE:
“Theophilus has been the top of his class his entire four years. He has aspirations of earning a degree in engineering and cyber security. Theo is a gifted student that loves to display his high levels of achievement in the classroom matched with his accolades in athletics. Throughout high school, Theo has participated in 5 varsity sports (Football, Basketball, Tennis, Baseball & Track). He is the reigning Robeson County Male Athlete of the Year. Currently he is the SAC-6 Offensive MVP and Robeson County Heisman winner.”
“Theo also is active in his Church where he serves in the usher ministry.”
UNIQUENESS: THE FATHER/SON & COACH/PLAYER RELATIONSHIP
“Theophilus is my youngest son. His two older brothers played football at Duke. He has had the same parenting that his older siblings had but because he is the youngest he has had to endure their successes and carve his own path. With that said, being his coach & Father has been so rewarding … I’m at a loss for words. As his Father, I tried to correct the mistakes I made with his older brothers like “bringing football home” less and really work on having a relationship outside of football.”
“However, football has always been an important factor in our family. The greatest aspect I can say is when I get out of the car at school I’m his coach and when I get out the car at home I’m his Dad but I don’t know if my roles as both ever truly ceases. Theophilus has always been my ball boy or QB, so now I don’t have that support system anymore, but that’s a Blessing as well because he goes on to bigger and better opportunities.”
WHAT THEO NEEDS TO WORK ON:
“I think it matches up with his temperament because for example West Point is the No. 1 engineering school in the country. Theo wants to be a mechanical engineer and he always wants to be the best of the best in whatever he does.”
“The most important area I think he needs to work on in his game is nutrition. With Theophilus playing so many sports in high school, he hasn’t ever had the opportunity to truly focus on one sport. We are excited to see him get the opportunity to build on his skills without any other sports interference and get the proper training to maximize his abilities.”
“We are so excited for our son and family to be a part of the Army Black Knights Brotherhood, we are truly BLESSED!”
